Quick answer: CBC Gem is free (with ads) in Canada — but the moment you're abroad, you get “the full Gem experience is not available outside Canada.” The fix: connect a VPN to a Canadian server, then open gem.cbc.ca in your browser and sign in to your free CBC account. NordVPN and Surfshark both reliably unblock Gem in 2026 testing.

What You Can Watch (Free)

CBC Gem streams Canadian originals, dramas and comedies, kids' shows, documentaries, true crime, plus live CBC channels, news, and major sports — it's the official Canadian streaming home of the Olympics. The free tier is ad-supported and only needs an email signup; Premium ($5.99/mo + tax) removes ads on-demand and adds 24/7 CBC News Network.

Step-by-Step: Watch CBC Gem From Anywhere

Get a VPN with Canadian servers. Gem detects and blocks weaker VPNs; NordVPN (300+ Canadian servers) and Surfshark pass in current testing.
Connect to a Canadian server — any Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver location.
Open gem.cbc.ca in your browser. No app or app-store region change needed on desktop — the browser version streams everything.
Sign in — or create a free account (just an email) while connected to the Canadian server.
Stream. For phones/tablets, the browser also works; the Gem app requires a Canadian app-store region, so browser is the shortcut.

Honest fine print: accessing Gem from abroad may go against CBC's terms, and geo-blocks exist because of content licensing. Most readers using this are Canadians traveling who already watch Gem at home — use your judgment.

Gem Says You're Outside Canada? Fixes

Hop to another Canadian server — flagged IPs are common; fresh ones work.
Private/incognito window — Gem caches your earlier location.
Enable the VPN's DNS/IPv6 leak protection — leaks are the #1 silent giveaway.
Refund path: both VPNs carry 30-day money-back guarantees, so a full test costs nothing if it fails for you.

Which VPN for CBC Gem?

NordVPN — the most consistently recommended Gem unblocker in 2026 guides, with the deepest Canadian server pool and the speed headroom for live sports. Surfshark — cheaper, unlimited devices, and passes Gem's checks in current tests. Full comparison: NordVPN vs Surfshark.
